Angels of Mercy Private Homecare Services started in 2001. As the nurse manager for a home care agency, I had spent hours helping families with the care of their loved ones. On June 19, 2001, my life changed forever. My mother, the matriarch of our family, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. My family saw a lively vibrant mother of the church, the family baby sitter, the family cook, backbone to not only her husband and children but her extended family and community become completely bedridden in less than five months.

My family had our first taste of what so many families face when they receive a heart-breaking diagnosis of terminal cancer. We immediately developed a plan for what we would do. My brother, his wife and three children left their home in Macon and moved in to help with the care of my mother. My sister in law was a school teacher and was out for the summer break. Everything was working fine. She was there during the day, and I came in the evenings and handled the medical tasks.

The summer ended, and we were in a dilemma of who would care for her while we were away at work. This decision was left up to my father, my brother, and I. We all were working full time. We had other family members that my mother had helped along the way. However, when we needed them to step up and they chose not to be available. We had to hire someone to come in to be an extension of us. I spent countless hours at my mother's bedside from the day of her diagnosis until her untimely death which was just shy of 5 months.

One evening after dinner while sitting at my mother's home, my brother suggested that I start my own home care business because I knew how to operate an agency. We experienced firsthand what families faced when a loved one receives a terminal diagnosis or sudden illness. He stated because of what we have experienced we can be a blessing to other families that need help to keep their loved ones in the home. My father was very supportive of the idea. He helped us start the business and Angels of Mercy was born. Thirteen years later, he suffered a massive stroke that left him bedridden for two years.

My brother and I had the task of being the primary caregivers to both of our parents. We have experienced caregiving from the personal and professional points of view. We take pride in assisting families in our community because we truly understand what it requires to provide care for an elderly or physically impaired loved one.
